Three Masters, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned Slack Key Show, share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack-key guitar and ‘ukulele. These styles originated in the early 19th century, when Portuguese immigrants introduced the ‘ukulele to Hawai‘i. Then, Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the islands, along with their ranching knowledge. Hawaiians have made these instruments their own.
Four-time Grammy-winner, master slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr., is hailed as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”. Further, he has won multiple Na Hōkū Hanohano (Hawaiian Grammy) Awards. Additionally, his Renaissance man status includes skills such as vocalist, storyteller, songwriter & author, teacher, sculptor, farmer, and chef. In 2022, he received a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. Also, he was inducted to the Maui Nui Hall of Fame in 2024. With these, the highest honors in music, George is established as a true treasure of Hawaiian culture.
Sonny Lim is a heralded Slack Key Guitarist, Hawaiian Steel Guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer. Here, he developed his guitar & vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. Then, Sonny became one of the early members of the renowned Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau. Here, he played lap steel guitar in this group, beginning at age fifteen. Further, he performed on the first Grammy-winning Hawaiian music album and has won multiple Na Hoku Awards on his own.
