“Bilal is hands down one of the greatest specimens of voice in post-modern hip-hop culture.” – Questlove

Bilal Sayeed Oliver epitomizes the essence of an independent artist. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, he consistently positions himself ahead of his time. Additionally, his music ingeniously fuses jazz, afro-futurism, classic soul, alternative R&B, rock, and even classical elements. Moreover, his wide vocal range, proficiency in multiple genres, and dynamic live performances have earned him widespread recognition.

Upon completing studies in jazz composition and opera at The New School in NYC, Bilal secured a recording deal right after college. Then in 2001, he launched his debut album, First Born Second. The album, featuring hits like fan-favorite “Soul Sista” and reflecting political views in “Fast Lane” and “Second Child”, quickly garnered a fanbase.

Bilal’s live performances, known for their emotional intensity and electrifying nature, helped him amass a substantial following swiftly. Additionally, his peers have lauded him for his range and his classically trained falsetto. Further, despite initial typecasting as a “neo-soul” artist, Bilal’s career-long venture into pioneering music has solidified his status beyond such a narrow classification.

Continuing to play jazz venues and record more progressive soul music, Bilal has released four critically acclaimed albums commercially. His second album, Love for Sale, achieved wide acclaim despite never being officially released. Also, the album features collaborations with Dr. Dre and J Dilla and showcases Bilal’s musicianship. However, despite its shelving by the record label, it still received over half a million downloads.

Bilal was a member of the Soulquarians, an experimental collective active from the late 1990s to early 2000s. Thus, he influenced a whole new generation of musicians and producers musically and culturally. Additionally, his extensive list of collaborations includes Kendrick Lamar, Common, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Guru, Kimbra, J Dilla, Robert Glasper, and The Roots.
