“the essence of what jazz is.” – Jazz Police
Ahmed and the Creators are seasoned masters of classic jazz. They are often hailed as purists for their unwavering dedication to the genre’s foundations. Here, their set will feature timeless standards from legends like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Mongo Santamaria.
Ahmed Abdulkarim has been performing music his entire life. He began on the piano and then moved around from the bugle to the trombone. Finally, he settled on the trumpet in 1956. Trumpet jazz is where he truly found his voice. Additionally, Ahmed studied under Manny Laureano of the Minnesota Orchestra. Furthermore, he has performed at legendary venues including First Ave, The Dakota, and The Stand in NYC.
Omar Abdulkarim has been playing the trumpet since he was fourteen months old. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Omar has shared the stage with Roy Hargrove, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE and Talib Kweli. He has also performed with Nicholas Payton’s Television Studio Orchestra and Valerie Ponomarev’s Big Band.
Omar’s versatility extends beyond live performances. He has written and recorded music with Lauryn Hill and Jose James. His influences include Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, John Coltrane and Lee Morgan.
“With a dynamic blend of individual styles, Ahmed and the Creators lack nothing when it comes to the fullness of sound you might find with a large orchestra and yet retain the personality and intimacy typical of smaller jazz combos.” – Twin Cities Gateway
