“A jazz-pop powerhouse” – The New York Times
International trumpet superstar Chris Botti makes his return to the Dakota for six shows, running October 27-29, 2023. In what is becoming an annual event, this will be his third stop at the club, one of the smallest venues on his tour.
As an instrumentalist, Botti is on another level. A solo artist since 2004, Botti came to national attention through his work with Paul Simon and achieved worldwide fame while working with Sting. Since then, he has sold more albums than any other instrumental artist: four #1 jazz albums, numerous Gold and Platinum certifications, and six Grammy awards. Botti has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and transcends beyond the limits of any single genre.
A quick glance at Botti’s tour schedule reveals few surprises – theaters, performing arts centers, and symphony halls: primarily large-capacity venues. Along with New York’s Blue Note, the Dakota is one of the smallest venues on his tour schedule, providing a rare level of intimacy to enjoy this supremely talented artist and his exceptional band of musicians and singers.
These shows are an opportunity for Botti to return to his roots: the Portland-area jazz clubs he played at while still in high school, and the New York clubs where, while a college student, he spent his summers studying with Woody Shaw and George Coleman. While the music may be similar (Botti will be joined by his regular 8-piece band), playing to a club is a whole world away from the large stages he frequents. Botti relishes the immediacy of the club dates, and he welcomes the challenge of fitting his big show to the smaller stage.
The Dakota is a rare gem in the Twin Cities entertainment scene. One of few establishments to serve a full, chef-driven menu paired with world-class music performances seven nights a week, the Dakota is more than a restaurant and more than a music club; it’s where the love of great food and great music come together as a seamless duet.
