Pop music darling Suzanne Vega is returning to the stage in a wonderful way, following the October release of her latest album. She performs at the Dakota on Nov. 7 and 8, 2016 with opening act Teddy Thompson (the critically praised son of Richard & Linda Thompson).
Her new album, “Lover, Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers” is based on a play Vega wrote about McCullers, her favorite childhood author. The music, co-written by songwriter Duncan Sheik, is a stylistically rich and theatrical blend of blues, jazz, folk, Gypsy, and art-pop.
Seeking to evoke a busy, cosmopolitan texture, Vega employs a wide variety of instruments: accordion, banjo, clarinet, mandolin, piano, string bass, trombone, and ukulele. Suzanne brings a larger ensemble to the Dakota than she has in the past, and evoking these disparate sounds will be the task of guitar great Gerry Leonard. Gerry toured as David Bowie’s Musical Director for nearly a decade, and is more than up to the task.
Renowned for her 1987 Top 10 hits ‘Luka’ and ‘Tom’s Diner,’ Vega is a vivid singer/songwriter who pulls imagery and scenes from real life into her songs. She finds just the right word, the right chord, to bring the listener into the musical landscape.
Our very own local music hero, Prince, once sent her a personal hand-written letter, telling her how touched he was by her music. The letter reads: “Dearest Suzanne, Luka is the most compelling piece of music I have heard in a long time. There are no words 2 tell you all the things I feel when I hear it. I thank God 4 U – Prince”
A special part of these shows is the inclusion of Teddy Thompson, who will join Suzanne’s band on stage after a short opening set of his own. Teddy’s songwriting and voice have put him on the short list of songwriters who are shaping modern music.
Be sure to catch Suzanne Vega at the intimate Dakota on Nov. 7 & 8, 2016, at 7pm. You will be thrilled that you did.
