Two of the Caribbean’s biggest Calypso Stars
The Mighty Sparrow is the unrivaled Calypso King of the World, with a career that spans over 55 years. The Elvis Presley of Calypso has entertained audiences across the globe, including the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, to name but a few. An 11-time winner of the Calypso Monarchy and an eight-time winner of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival Road March competition, he is one of the Caribbean’s most successful and enduring artists.
Calypso Rose embodies the legendary heart and soul of the Caribbean. She began writing songs at the age of 15, and has written over 800 songs. In 1966 she wrote the song Fire in Me Wire, which has since become a calypso anthem. She won the Calypso Queen title five years running, and became the first female to win the Trinidad Road March Competition, in 1977 with her song “Tempo”. She has also won both the Trinidad Calypso Crown and Road March competitions in 1978, the Sunshine Award in 1989 and the Trinidad and Tobago Hummingbird Medal in 2000.
