[...] Even when he wasn’t talking about his own sexuality, Nöel Coward was certainly talking about sex, as evidenced by the 65 minute review “Coward’s Women” running now through April 3 at the Guthrie’s Dowling studio. In an era of saccharine sweet crooning from pristine starlets, Coward pushed the boundaries with “Let’s Do It” and “Nina.” Not afraid to be edgy, even insulting for a laugh, Coward pokes fun at himself, rival Cole Porter, and the women of his childhood with the hilarious, “Don’t Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs. Worthington.” Interludes between songs give some insight on the man himself, but the lyrics alone speak volumes. Think sassy, feminist, bawdy and bold, Coward was certainly ahead of his time. Vocalists Erin Schwab and Maud Hixon toss Coward’s lines back and forth, backed up by veteran performers headed up by the silky-voiced Rick Carlson on keyboards. Coward’s Women, while laden with nostalgia and kitsch, is an entertaining look at a truly progressive performer in the great tradition of American theatre.
