Enough has already been said about Miles Davis’s influence on the jazz world. For decades Davis stayed just on the cusp of what was new and exciting in music, and consistently pushed himself and his bands to new levels of interaction and experiments with form. Perhaps his most controversial work is his electric period, starting in the late 1960s with In a Silent Way and Bitches’ Brew. This is the period Wynton Marsalis has famously referred to as “when Miles stopped playing jazz,” and yet has been a watershed of its own, serving as the foundation for several new musical genres and inspiring musicians of all varieties and disciplines.
Here an amazing array of local and regional talent is assembled to play this music. Bandleader Luke Polipnick has been based in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the past five years, and has been seen in the area playing with his trio Volcano Insurance, improvising percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, and other small group improvising situations. Bryan Nichols, Chris Bates, and J.T. Bates are all regular visitors to the Dakota stage, and are joined by special guests Paul Krueger and Patrick Breiner.
