Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek)

With brother Sean Watkins on guitar, vocals

This 27-year-old singer-songwriter and fiddle player has spent nearly two decades—all of her teenage and young adult life—as one-third of Nickel Creek, the Grammy Award–winning acoustic trio that used contemporary bluegrass as a starting point for its no-genre-barred sound. She is stepping out on her own with her debut release, which is informed as much by the bluegrass tradition as it is by the pop and country she grew up listening to. Her virtuosity on guitar and ukulele as well as fiddle serves as a perfect foil for her surprisingly mature voice, and the songs she writes are just as memorable as the ones she chooses to play.
